Graham Ablett

 

Graham Ablett

(Partner) has an Honours degree in Physics from Birmingham University, and subsequently qualified as a Patent Attorney in 1984. Prior to specialising in intellectual property law, he spent a year living in Germany to learn the German language, two years conducting research in the field of gamma ray physics, and two years developing refractory production techniques for the steel industry. He set up his own firm in 1988 from which he moved in 1993 to help found the present firm with Peter Stebbing.

Graham has a wide experience of patent and trade mark practice in the UK and Europe. He is conversant with a broad range of electrical and electronic/computer technology, and has particular specialist knowledge of consumer appliances, containers, telephones, printing machinery, optical and printer arts, and software related inventions.

Graham is a keen golfer and also enjoys staying fit by regularly attending the gym and playing soccer.

Paul Williams

(Partner) has a Masters degree in Chemistry from Oxford University. After university, he immediately trained with a firm of Patent Attorneys in London before moving to the Intellectual Property department of a large US chemical company.  He qualified as a Patent Attorney in 1999, subsequently joining Ablett & Stebbing in 2001. 

Paul has extensive experience of drafting and prosecuting patent applications thereby developing an in-depth knowledge of a variety of technical fields with particular specialisation in the area of chemistry.

With a young family, Paul currently has little time outside of the office to maintain his previous interest in skiing and hiking, but he continues to enjoy playing the guitar, and from time to time swings a golf club.

Tom Gaunt

(Partner) has an Honours degree in Biomaterials and a Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Birmingham University. On leaving university, Tom immediately specialised in intellectual property law, and started training with a firm of Patent Attorneys in Japan, before joining Ablett & Stebbing in 2003. Tom qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney in 2007.

Tom has a broad range of experience of patent practice across a wide range of technologies. During his Masters degree, Tom conducted research into the field of plasma surface engineering and tribology. During his time in Japan, he then developed expertise in the field of consumer electronics and semiconductor manufacture. Tom now handles patent portfolios over a range of technologies, with a particular emphasis on electronics and engineering. Tom also has an interest in patent licensing and is a member of the Licensing Executives Society.

With a young family, Tom has little spare time outside of work. He does try to run and get to the gym when he can, although his main hobby of snowboarding has been put on hold until his daughters are old enough for ski school.

Sarah Cannon

Sarah Cannon

(Senior Trade Mark Associate) Prior to joining Ablett & Stebbing in 2012, Sarah had worked as a Trade Mark Examiner at the Australian Intellectual Property Office gaining valuable insight into the functioning and processes of a registration authority.

On relocating to the UK 11 years ago, she joined a London-based private practice firm and qualified as a UK and European Trade mark Attorney. She has experience providing strategic commercial advice in relation to trade mark, passing off and design related issues, including conducting clearance searches, filing and prosecuting trade mark and design applications, handling contentious proceedings and managing global portfolios.

In her spare time, Sarah enjoys her roles as a communication support volunteer for the Stroke Association and a learning mentor for Love To Learn.

 Helene Whelbourne

(Senior Trade Mark Associate) Helene graduated from the University of Leeds with a BSc (Hons) Psychology. She joined the trade mark profession after finishing university with a London firm of patent and trade mark attorneys as a trainee trade mark agent in 1990. Helene joined Ablett & Stebbing in 2016.

Helene qualified as a Registered Trade Mark Attorney in 1994. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys and European Trade Mark Attorney

Helene has extensive experience in the protection and enforcement of trade marks worldwide including searching, filing and prosecuting trade mark applications, defending against and filing oppositions and invalidation actions, advising on infringement and counterfeit issues, advising on domain name disputes. She has worked across a range of industries during her career ranging from food and drinks, fashion, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, computers, technology, energy, financial institutions and human resources and training providers. She has experience of advising a range of different types of clients including private individuals, SMEs and global organisations.

Helene's spare time is divided between being a parent to two teenage boys and fitting in time for various hobbies including walking in the countryside, gardening, reading, crafting, playing computer games and managing her husband's DIY projects.

David Taylor

(Senior Patent Attorney) has an Honours degree in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Condensed-Matter Physics from Durham University. After several years working in scientific research at universities in North America and Europe, David started at a large London-based firm of Patent Attorneys in 2007. He qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney in 2011 and then worked for a specialist intellectual property firm in Cambridge before joining Ablett & Stebbing in 2017.

 

David has a wealth of experience in patent drafting, international patent prosecution, patent strategy and different aspects of intellectual property law including designs. He advises companies and institutions of various sizes, and spent a year seconded in-house at a Global 500 company. His practice covers physics, electronics, information technology, engineering and more.

 

In his free time, David plays tennis and occasionally goes kayaking. He is interested in science and technology, and is a named inventor on a patent application relating to a consumer product.

Alexi Gerolemou

(Trainee) has a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University. He was also awarded the Diploma in Industrial Studies after spending a year working for an engineering firm based in Sophia Antipolis, France, providing consultancy services to the power industry. For his dissertation, Alexi developed a method of manufacturing medical devices with a tailored gradient of porosity.

Before starting to train as a patent attorney with Ablett & Stebbing, Alexi worked as an automotive engineer on the Bosch Graduate Specialist Programme, with his primary focus being the automation of ECU calibration tests conducted at Ford's Dunton track.

Outside of work Alexi enjoys mountain biking, playing guitar, snowboarding and all things automotive.
